Guardians of the Coastal Ecosystem
Urraca Monkey Island isn’t your typical island. Instead of solid ground, we’re built upon a vibrant mangrove forest! These incredible trees thrive in saltwater, their roots intertwined to create a unique ecosystem.
Red mangroves are especially important here. Their tangled roots provide shelter and food for a variety of marine life, including fish, crabs, and birds. They also protect our shores from storms and erosion, and help filter pollutants from the water.
Did you know? The yellow leaves on a red mangrove are called “Sacrifice Leaves” and help the tree get rid of excess salt.
Stroll along our pathways and observe the diverse wildlife, including our playful monkeys swinging through the mangroves!

The Ocean's Colorful Stars
These fascinating creatures come in a variety of colors and shapes, and play an important role in our marine ecosystem. While exploring the waters around Urraca Monkey Island, you might spot these beautiful starfish.
Did you know? Starfish are not actually fish! They are echinoderms, related to sea urchins and sand dollars. They have no brain or blood, and can regenerate lost arms.
Help us protect these delicate creatures:
- Observe from a distance: Admire their beauty without touching or disturbing them.
- No photos with starfish out of the water: This can harm them.
- Be mindful of their habitat: Avoid stepping on or disturbing the seabed.
Nature's Underwater Cleaners
These fascinating creatures may look like simple blobs, but they play a vital role in our marine ecosystem. Sea cucumbers are like the ocean’s recyclers, processing sediment and helping to maintain the balance of the ocean. This is essential for the health of coral reefs and other marine life.
Did you know? Sea cucumbers have a unique defence mechanism. When threatened, they can expel their internal organs to distract predators! They can then regenerate these organs over time.
Help us protect these important creatures:
- Observe from a distance: Admire them without touching or disturbing them.
- Avoid stepping on them: They are often camouflaged on the seabed.
- Be mindful of their habitat: Avoid disturbing the sand or coral where they live.
