A Sanctuary for Rescued Primates

Meet the Monkeys

Welcome to Urraca Monkey Island, a sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of primates. Here, amidst the lush tropical forests of Panama, we provide a safe haven for monkeys who have been injured, orphaned, or displaced.

Our dedicated team works tirelessly to give these primates a second chance, providing them with the care and support they need to thrive.

While some may be successfully reintroduced to the wild, others find a permanent home here on Urraca, living out their days in a protected and nurturing environment.

Friendly Forest Howlers

Mantled Howler Monkey

The Mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) often faces challenges in the wild due to habitat loss and human encroachment. At Urraca, we provide a sanctuary for howlers who have been injured or orphaned. Here, they can live in a protected environment, exhibiting their natural social behaviors and contributing to the island’s ecosystem. Our team provides specialized care, ensuring their well-being and studying their unique vocalizations and social dynamics within the sanctuary.

Intelligent Tool Users

Capuchin Monkey

Capuchin monkeys are renowned for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities. At Urraca, we celebrate these traits by providing them with an enriching environment tailored to their needs. Our capuchin troop has free access to a private, natural island, where they can roam as they would in the wild. They travel to the island through a specially constructed tunnel, granting them complete freedom to explore, forage, and engage in natural social interactions within their island sanctuary. While the mangrove environment might not be their typical forest habitat, the island provides a safe and stimulating space for them to play and interact as a troop. We also provide stimulating activities that cater to their inquisitive minds, ensuring their physical and mental well-being.

Playful Jungle Acrobats

Squirrel Monkey

Squirrel monkeys, inhabiting the lush rainforests of Panama, are small, energetic primates known for their acrobatic prowess and lively social interactions. These intelligent and curious creatures, sadly, often face challenges in the wild due to habitat loss, the illegal pet trade, and even the exotic pet food industry. At Urraca, we offer a sanctuary for squirrel monkeys who have been injured, orphaned, or displaced. Here, they can socialize in large groups, express their natural behaviors, and receive the care they need to thrive. Our team provides enrichment activities that stimulate their minds and bodies, ensuring their well-being. Witnessing their high levels of activity, playful interactions, and strong social cohesion within the safety of their sanctuary is a testament to the importance of our work.

Lively Caring Climbers

Geoffroy's Tamarin

Geoffroy’s Tamarins, with their striking facial patterns and cooperative breeding behavior, are vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation. At Urraca, we provide a sanctuary for a small, dedicated troop of these unique primates. Currently, our tamarin family consists of two individuals, each with their own story of resilience. One of our tamarins required extensive physical rehabilitation upon arrival, and we’re proud to have supported their journey to recovery. We provide a safe and nurturing environment for these small but resilient primates, ensuring their well-being and observing their close-knit family dynamics. Witnessing their interactions is a testament to the importance of preserving their natural habitat and supporting their recovery.
